FAQs

Initiated in 1985 by the Federal Communications Commission, the Lifeline program was set up to assist low-income consumers in all states, territories, and Tribal lands in accessing essential telecommunication services. The program is managed by the Universal Service Administrative Company under the supervision of the FCC and funded by the U.S. Government.

Lifeline has been pivotal in offering phone service discounts to millions of eligible low-income individuals, helping them stay connected with work, family, healthcare services, job opportunities, and emergency services like 911.

The Affordable Connectivity Program is designed to ensure households can afford necessary broadband for tasks such as work, school, and healthcare. This program offers up to $30 monthly discount on internet service for eligible homes, and up to $75 for those on qualifying Tribal lands. Additionally, a one-time discount of up to $100 is available for purchasing a laptop, desktop, or tablet through participating providers if the household contributes between $10 and $50 towards the purchase. The ACP restricts this subsidy to one service and one device discount per household each month.
